Many of us recently traveled north to Ohio and talked with many friends of the mission at Jane O’Connor’s funeral. Jane was a faithful supporter and a “missionary of intercession” since the founding of Servants of the Cross. “How are things going in the mission?” was the most frequent question we were asked.
We are still restricted by COVID policies handed down by the civil authorities and the bishops. (Our situation is much more constrained than in the United States, in general.) Frustration and disappointment can threaten, especially when people become lethargic or visibly apathetic or even drop out of all participation in their relationships.
We continue to move forward at the new, slower pace which is not as encouraging to young people. Adolescents and single men and women need to see results. They are used to a faster pace and not as accustomed as married couples to seeing the value of daily faithfulness to well-attested priorities.
The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. (Lam. 3:25-26)
While we experience great advantages of face-to-face encounters, and the richness of the culture of life is more palpable when we are gathered in one place, still we have to base our endeavors on a virtual format. We are making provisions to meet, but those could be interrupted at any point, so the virtual structure is more immune to a complete shutdown of all activities.
I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. (Isa. 8:17)
There are many ways to serve right now, even though we know that meeting together more often will be an improvement. Please pray that we can faithfully wait on the Lord, who certainly is teaching us many things through this time.
